Integer Point Sets Minimizing Average Pairwise l1 Distance: What is the Optimal Shape of a Town?
نویسندگان
چکیده
An n-town, n ∈ N, is a group of n buildings, each occupying a distinct position on a 2-dimensional integer grid. If we measure the distance between two buildings along the axis-parallel street grid, then an n-town has optimal shape if the sum of all pairwise Manhattan distances is minimized. This problem has been studied for cities, i.e., the limiting case of very large n. For cities, it is known that the optimal shape can be described by a differential equation, for which no closed-form solution is known. We show that optimal n-towns can be computed in O(n) time. This is also practically useful, as it allows us to compute optimal solutions up to n = 80.

An L1-norm method for generating all of efficient solutions of multi-objective integer linear programming problem
This paper extends the proposed method by Jahanshahloo et al. (2004) (a method for generating all the efficient solutions of a 0–1 multi-objective linear programming problem, Asia-Pacific Journal of Operational Research). This paper considers the recession direction for a multi-objective integer linear programming (MOILP) problem and presents necessary and sufficient conditions to have unbounde...
متن کاملA Switchgrass-based Bioethanol Supply Chain Network Design Model under Auto-Regressive Moving Average Demand
Switchgrass is known as one of the best second-generation lignocellulosic biomasses for bioethanol production. Designing efficient switchgrass-based bioethanol supply chain (SBSC) is an essential requirement for commercializing the bioethanol production from switchgrass. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to design SBSC in which bioethanol demand is under auto-r...
متن کاملMonitoring process variability: a hybrid Taguchi loss and multiobjective genetic algorithm approach
The common consideration on economic model is that there is knowledge about the risk of occurrence of an assignable cause and the various cost parameters that does not always adequately describe what happens in practice. Hence, there is a need for more realistic assumptions to be incorporated. In order to reduce cost penalties for not knowing the true values of some parameters, this paper aims ...
متن کاملNatural pseudo-distance and optimal matching between reduced size functions
We study a dissimilarity measure between shapes, expressed by the natural pseudodistance between size pairs, where a shape is viewed as a topological space endowed with a real-valued continuous function. Measuring dissimilarity amounts to minimizing the change in the functions due to the application of homeomorphisms between topological spaces, with respect to the L∞-norm. A new class of shape ...
متن کاملIntegral point sets over Zn
There are many papers studying properties of point sets in the Euclidean space Em or on integer grids Zm, with pairwise integral or rational distances. In this article we consider the distances or coordinates of the point sets which instead of being integers are elements of Z/Zn, and study the properties of the resulting combinatorial structures.
